  Band Class Openings: Musicology School of Music has immediate openings in band classes (ages 13-18) for Bass Guitar, Piano, and Back Ground Vocals. If you are interested let your instructor know. Also we have any guitarist or drummers (that have teacher approval) that would like to be in a band, if we have enough interested we will start a new class. What’s Happening at Musicology Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a great holiday season and super start for 2015. At Musicology School of Music, we are excited about the new year. Before we put 2014 behind us, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for making 2014 the best year to date for the school. The following are just a few of the accomplishments that Musicology achieved during 2014. · Became an LLC · Moved into an amazing Facility. · Hired 9 Great Teachers · Hired our first Front Desk Assistant. · Had Recitals on Campus!! · Had first Adult only Recital! · Had two Successful Open houses. · Our Rock Bands played Whistle Stop · Became the Largest Music School in the Area. Make Up Classes: The biggest change in Musicology last year without a doubt was the addition of Make Up Classes. Before 2014, when someone missed we had to make up that class before the next month. For teachers and students this meant lots of Sunday afternoons spent at the school. It was also problematic for the students who were sick or busy that could not make the lesson up before the next month. So out of necessity, make up classes was born. Here is a little review about makeup classes. Any time you have to miss just call us and let us know you’re not coming. Students that let us know that they are not coming before the lesson will receive a make up credit. That make up credit is good for 12 months. Beginning in 2014, we began group make up classes. We have been very pleased with the results. The class is scheduled for one hour and is age and level appropriate. Here is an example of the class structure. All students play in front of the group something they have been working on in lessons. The teacher then gives some kind of presentation of theory or an introduction to a technique. Then the teacher pairs the students in groups to play duets or trios together. If only one student signs up for a class we still give the student the full hour. As one of the owners, I love teaching the make up classes. One main reason: Quality Control. I cannot personally sit in every lesson taught here at the school, but during make up classes I can gauge our students and teachers progress. Even the classes I don’t teach, I can communicate with the teacher who did to see if there were any concerns. Another reason I love the make up class format, is that playing in front of the group is something I cannot simulate in a private lesson. I suggest that every student before they perform their first recital participate in one of our makeup classes. The last reason that I love the make up class format is that students get multiple approaches to learning. I have personally had students who took a make up class that had a break through with another teacher who explained a concept different from me. I have also in return done the same thing for students who take with someone else. I am excited about a new twist for the makeup class coming during 2015. Musicology will begin to offer topics for the makeup classes. During conversations with students and teachers over this year, I came to the conclusion that there are some general topics that all student regardless of instrument could participate and benefit from at the same time. For example, Rhythm is a such a topic. We will begin to offer makeup classes on reading rhythms, note reading, and performance techniques. These classes will be for all students not just specific instruments who have a makeup credit. Along with topic driven make up classes, we will be experimenting with Intro Classes. I cannot tell you how many times I hear someone say that they would like to try a different instrument. Musicology throughout the 2015 year will be offering many different introduction classes. So if you are a guitar student who has a makeup credit but has always been curious about drums you can try our Intro to Drum class. If you’re a piano student who would like to sing, you could try the Intro to Voice Class. Usually after recitals, I have students who see someone perform a different instrument and peaks their interest about that instrument. These classes can help students determine whether or not they truly would like to pursue a new instrument. So how does someone sign up for a makeup class? Here is a quick step guide to enrolling into a class. 1. Call or email the office to let us know you are not coming. Students who let us know before their class time starts will receive a makeup credit. You may call us at 256-325-6099 or email us at office@musicologyschoolofmusic.com. 2. Once you have received a conformation email that you have a credit, sign up for a class. You may do so on our website. Go the makeup tab click on it and pick the day and time that is available. If you have trouble signing in contact the office. 3. If you prefer, you can always call the office from 3-6pm and have Peyton do it for you.  TEACHER OF THE MONTH Vanessa Miller Mantis What do you teach? I teach voice and piano. What do you like most about teaching? The best part of teaching is when a student grasps a difficult concept, improves upon a trouble spot, or has a beautiful performance. What is your favorite type of music? My favorite type of music is any song that suits my voice, so I can enjoy singing it. Singing is my favorite thing to do. Do you have any upcoming performances?
