As Musicology continues to grow, our dream for the school does as well. More than two years ago, we decided that having a performance space was a must for our school. We believe that performing is an essential part of the learning experience. We wanted to give our students more opportunities to perform than any of our competitors. Most music schools only do two recitals a year (Christmas & Spring) in which they have to rent a facility to hold the recitals. Due to this, they usually charge a recital fee. We felt having our own space would give us a competitive advantage in our marketplace and it has. Musicology is now the largest music school in North Alabama. Although we had performance space in our old location, we had to share the space. With our new building, we now have our own stage, sound system, and chairs for performances. Because of these resources, Musicology is excited to announce the introduction of our Monthly Concert Series. It has long been a dream of ours to provide a place where local performers can have an opportunity to play and our students can have the opportunity to experience different styles of music in a family friendly environment. The Concert Series will be a monthly fundraiser for Musicology to offset the cost of major equipment purchases. Tickets for the concerts will be $5 a person. On May 7th @ 7:00pm, we will have The Melodious Mishmash with special guest Megan Robinson opening the night. The Melodious Mishmash is an organ trio that plays a mix of Jazz, Funk, & Blues. Megan Robinson is a former student of Musicology and is in the genre of singer songwriter. Tickets can be purchased here at Musicology. Seating is limited, so hurry to get your seat and help support our school. Spring Showcase Dates / Procedures & Policies For the last two years, we have provided our clients with four free recitals (Student Showcases) each year. In May, we are coming up on our first Showcase of the year. The Spring Student Showcase will be held Saturday May 14th and May 15th. There is no required dress code for the showcase; we want our students to wear what makes them feel comfortable. Due to the number of students at Musicology, we will be having 5 recitals. We value our teachers free time and have scheduled the Showcases so our teachers will only have to come one day. Students of Naphtali, Maria, Ryan, Jonathan, Kelli, Jeffery, Jenny, and Jessie can choose either 4:00pm or 6:00pm on Saturday May 14th. Students of DeAndre, Rollin, Eric, Quentin, Vanessa, and Derrik can choose ether 1:00pm, 3:00pm, or 5:00pm on Sunday May 15th. If your child or children take from teachers on different showcase days please feel free to choose either of the days. Just make sure that the teacher on the day not chosen is not supposed to accompany your child. You may sign up for the recital on our website, or you may call Kat M-F from 3– 6:00pm or Saturdays from 9 – 4:00pm. These are Kat’s work hours and she alone is in charge of scheduling for the recital. Before you signup, please have the following information available: How many people will be attending, Name of Song being performed, which Day and Time you will be attending. You must sign up for the showcase by April 23rd or you will be placed on our waiting list. We currently can accommodate 150 guests. Once a showcase reaches 150 guests, we will close that showcase and no one else will be allowed to join it. If two showcases are below 50%, we will combine the showcases. For example, if the Saturday showcases were below 50% we would have one showcase at 5:00pm. Spring Student Showcase May 14th 4:00pm & 6:00pm Students of Naphtali, Maria, Ryan, Jonathan, Kelli, Jenny, Jeffery, and Jessie Spring Student Showcase May 15th 1:00pm, 3:00pm, & 5:00pm Students of DeAndre, Rollin, Eric, Quentin, Vanessa, Derrik A Teacher of the Month Jamie Clay 1. What are the things you like most about teaching? When I look back on all the private teachers, band and choral directors, as well as college classroom instructors in music I have had over the years, I remember the ones that most challenged and inspired me. If I can inspire students to reach their potential, while keeping music fun, I will feel that I have in some way helped to pay back those who have encouraged me over the years. 2. How do you inspire students to practice more? The best inspiration for practicing comes from this quote by Doug Yeo. Mr. Yeo summed it up in six sentences. "If you practice, you get better. If you get better, you play (or sing) with better players (or singers). If you play with better players, you play better music. If you play better music, you have more fun. If you have more fun, you want to practice more. If you practice more, you get better." I wish I had said that! 3. What part do you feel that the recital experience plays in a student’s development? Music is a gift and an art to be shared. So much of a musician's growth comes from working toward a goal of getting a piece of music ready to perform. Recital performance is both a humbling and an exhilarating experience. There is nothing more self-rewarding and gratifying than knowing you have performed a piece to the best of your ability. 4. What is your favorite type of music? I know this sounds cliché, but I thoroughly enjoy all types of music. I started piano lessons at the age of six and began playing clarinet and saxophones in the fifth and seventh grades, respectively. I had wonderful parents who would take me to the opera and classical concerts when I was growing up. I also love pop (I always wanted to be a female Barry Manalow or Billy Joel) and acapella vocal music. Student of the Month: |
