 Family Fun Fest June 6th 2015 Musicology School of Music has been asked to return to the VBC on June 6th to help with the entertainment for the Family Fun Fest. Our Rock Bands will be performing on the Main Stage in the afternoon, but our students have been asked to perform all day in not one, but two locations! The Family Fun Fest will be having an indoor train for the children to ride that will be going from one point inside the VBC to another. Musicology has been asked to perform at the two train stops for the children that will be waiting for the train. So in essence, we will be street musicians for the event. Students will be performing at one train stop then at the other. So all of our students will be performing twice!  Musicology School of Music LLC is proud to announce the hiring of our new Violin, Piano, & Guitar instructor. Katie Pachmayr has been a private music instructor for 13 years. After studying classical violin and piano as a child, Katie started traveling to local music festivals and fell in love with bluegrass and old-time fiddling. During high school, Katie formed a bluegrass band and toured throughout the southeast playing showcases and teaching workshops. Her bluegrass band won first place at Silver Dollar City’s Single Mic Youth Bluegrass Band Competition in 2006. Katie later attended Middle Tennessee State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Recording Industry with a concentration in Music Business. While at MTSU, she served as an intern at the International Bluegrass Music Association and helped organize the 2011 World Of Bluegrass Convention. Katie loves sharing her passion for music with others and believes that learning to play any instrument should be a fun and enjoyable journey. We do this by offering band classes, guitar ensemble, and performance opportunities. While many good things can be achieved through individual practice and performance, there are many key benefits that come from students working on music with others. Here are a few thoughts on the importance of group interaction in music: We learn new things and how to become better musicians because of other people’s help. Whether someone learns an instrument through books, the Internet, teachers, or friends, learning music is always due to help from outside sources. Musicians and students alike tend to limit themselves if they ignore the many ways they can learn to advance and grow their skills. For example, when I first started playing guitar, I spent the first year working with one book and a few chords a friend showed me. Eventually I felt like I hit a wall and just couldn’t get any better. That’s when I started taking lessons. I grew as a musician at a much quicker rate and was able to achieve much more of what I wanted to do. As I added things to my practice such as new scales, music theory, techniques, and music styles, my playing became capable of more things. Group interaction allows people to get better at communicating about music. Like math or science, music has many parts and terms. The more you talk about and practice these things with other people, the more you understand what all these things mean. You are motivated to do well when working with other people. There is a healthy peer pressure for people playing in a group. Typically, no one wants to show up to a practice unprepared. They would perform poorly in front of friends or teachers, and also slow the group’s progress. So when student’s work with others, it encourages them to work hard so they perform well. These are just a few reasons Musicology finds group music opportunities to be an important part of what we do. There are many benefits and ways to advance as a musician by taking advantage of playing with others. Quentin is really sweet and he taught me different notes on the drums. What are the things you like the most about teaching? I really enjoy both helping student's learn music they love, and also helping them grow as a musician. For me it's not simply about teaching someone to learn to play a song, but is also about helping him or her understand music more thoroughly. If a student is willing to learn the theory, timing, techniques, and other aspects of a song, they will be more satisfied with their playing. It will also advance their overall musicianship better. 2. How do you inspire students to practice more? I try to give my student's things to practice that are fun, challenging, and doable. A big part of a student's interest in practice is allowing them to work on or towards music they like. Sometimes its a little bit trickier to get them to practice things like scales and exercises. So in those cases I try to make practice more interesting by showing them how scales and exercises will allow a student to accomplish more difficult things. 3. What part do you feel that playing or singing in a group has in a student's development? Recitals are motivating and a place for student's to share their hard work. When you have to play with other people, or perform for people, it motivates students to work hard so they play well. On top of that, recitals are a chance for a student to share their work with someone other than their teacher. 4. What is your favorite type of music? It would be hard for me to pick just one.
