What's Happening at Musicology? Hey Everyone! We hope this finds you well. Our first month of business at the new location is in the books and there is one thing we can all say..............we miss the couches!!! LOL! Seriously though, it was a great first month! We love the new facility, the new teachers and the new students. We want to give a heart-felt thank you to all our clients; previous Musicology students, former New Song students and brand new students to the school. We sincerely appreciate each and every one of you and will continue to do our best to give you or your children a quality musical education in a fun and friendly environment. There are a couple things we would like Inclement Weather Policy: We don't want anyone to put themselves in jeopardy. In the event of bad weather, please check our website, your emails, or your texts for notifications from Musicology. If you are not receiving emails from us, please check your spam folder or check with us to ensure we have the correct email address for you. African Drumming Classes: Starting March 1st, Musicology will now be offering traditional West African Drumming Classes. The classes will be taught by our good friend, Simba Foluke'. This is a group class that will take place on Saturdays from 4 to 5pm and is going to be tons of fun! I have personally studied with Simba. He is a great teacher with a sweet and gentle soul. I am extremely looking forward to these classes myself! Upcoming Recitals: Our next recitals are planned for Saturday, March 22nd and Sunday, March 23rd. They will be at Musicology (YAY!!!!) and are tentatively planned for 4 and 6pm on Saturday and 2 and 4pm on Sunday. We encourage everyone to participate, but participation is not mandatory. If you or your child wants to participate, this is what we need you to do: Go to our website, and click on the “Spring Recital” tab. Pick the recital time that you want and an estimation of how many guests you will have and submit it to us. The recital hall will hold about 80 people comfortably, so seating is somewhat limited. If there are not enough people signed up to warrant having recitals on either day, we will consolidate down to one recital at 5pm instead of two at 4 and 6pm. We are asking everyone to bring one can good item in place of admission, which will be donated, to Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen And Thrift Store. For more info about Rose of Sharon visit their website. http://roseofsharonsoupkitchen.org Band Classes: In order to cut down on time, the Band Classes, will not be performing this recital. We are currently working with Panoply, the Madison Street Festival, Moe's BBQ and some other venues about possible performance opportunities for the Band Classes. We may also have a separate rock concert where the bands perform at a later date. We will give you more details as they develop. Please let us know if you or your child is interested in participating in band classes. We currently have openings for guitar and piano and would love to start another band class if we have enough people interested. What is the coolest thing you've learned in your lessons in the past three months? A Drum set solo 6.Do you have any performances coming up? Yes, Percussion Ensemble performance at James Clemens High School  Teacher of the Month Jennifer Rollins What do you like most about teaching? I love that look on a students face when they have done something they have never done before. Whether it is a note in a song, conquering that fear of being on stage or reaching a goal they have set for themselves. I want my students to find that musical moment. It was teachers, who inspired me to be more than a girl from a small town and those teachers are why I love what I do, today. How do I inspire students to practice more? I want my students to pick out music they want to learn. Then I build a digital dropbox that my students can access by computer or smartphone. This is so they can have access to their music anytime. My students think it is cool and parents love that they do not have to look for lost music. Students will work on things that they want to learn, so they pick a piece of music and I pick one that complements strengths and weaknesses. Then highlight what my students do well and what they need to focus on. I also try to be open to all genres of music. Students put more effort into things that they want to learn, and that is half the battle. How does playing and practicing music impact a child’s life? I like to create opportunities for my students. They do the work; I just provide the platform and framework for them to be successful. If someone would have told me that I would be a music teacher when a band director put my horn in my hands as a fifth grade student, well I would have laughed at you. Younger students may not realize it now, but it will impact them. I love the fact that I have students of all ages because music has no age limit or restriction. Anyone can learn music from three to ninety three. Another time was when I had graduated from high school, music paid for my way through college. It has been my livelihood now for more than fifteen years. What a wonderful gift to be able to pass on to someone else…because someone passed music to me. What is my favorite type of music and why do I enjoy it? I love anything live. It can be in a park or at a concert hall. Jazz is my favorite type but Chicago is my favorite band. I love the complexity of what a player does and how they make it look so easy. I know how long it takes to put a live performance together and I appreciate the time that an artist or group puts into it.  Musicology School of Music, LLC Is now offering Traditional West African Drumming Classes. Each Student will learn to play and perform rhythms from West Africa and learn about the history, purpose, and cultural context of the Drums and the people. Benefits of Class: Drumming energizes; Facilitates feelings of love, joy and unity; Increases mathematical ability, focus, awareness, discipline, self-esteem, memory, team-building skills, hand-eye coordination, literacy, responsibility, listening skills and self-expression; Enhances respiratory function and a host of other physical, mental and spiritual aptitudes! Classes will begin March 1st. Class will meet four times per month and the sessions will be one hour long from 4pm to 5pm. If you start mid-month, per session prices are available.
