A big shout out goes to all the performers who braved the Stage. We would also like to thank all of our teachers who came and helped out in various ways throughout the recitals. The day was a complete success. Performance Opportunities: The 14 and under recital will be Sunday October 19th at 2:00pm & 4:00pm. This recital will be a costume party. Dress as your favorite musical star or a character from the song that you will be performing. So if you play the song Iron Man you could dress as my favorite super hero Tony Stark. If you play or sing the theme from Cinderella then you can and dress like a princess. It should be a fun day filled with many memories. Also Redstone Village, an assisted living community, has asked Musicology to bring our students on Sunday November 9th at 2:00pm, to perform for their residents. If you are interested in this unique performance opportunity please talk to your teacher this month and then sign up online on our website. The 411 on Make Up Classes: Every week we are asked about our Group Makeup Classes. Here is the lowdown on them. When you know you cannot come to your regularly schedule class, let us know and we will give you a makeup credit in your MindBody account. The Make Up Credit is good for 12 months. Once you have received confirmation of your credit, you can go to our website, click on the makeup page and sign up for a class. DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT when you log into MindBody. Use the email address you have on file with us. If you do not know your MindBody password, click on the Forgot Password Link. Once you are logged in you can view each weeks make up class offerings. If you need assistance signing up for a class, contact the office from 3:00 pm – 6:00pm M-F and Peyton will be glad to help you. Musicology has added more makeup classes due to the enrollment at the school. We will even have a few of these new classes during the week. Remember that if a make up class has no one signed up for it within 24 hours before the class is scheduled to begin, the class is canceled. Students must sign up for the class online, by phone, or talk to Peyton at the front desk to participate. Musicology has been recognized by this organization as one of the fastest growing schools in the Country. Musicology also has been asked to compete in the school of the year contest in March!  Teacher of the Month Jenny Williams What do you teach? Piano, Voice, Guitar, and Kindermusik. What is the best part of teaching? Seeing the look on the students face when they’re able to do something they couldn’t before. What is your favorite type of music and why do you enjoy it? I think my ideal playlist would include Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Foo Fighters, Regina Spektor, Claude Debussey, George Gershwin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Mumford and Sons, and Little Big Town. (There’s probably a little more but that’s a good overview…lol) Hit shuffle, and I’m a happy girl J Upcoming Performances? Every day is a performance trying to make my baby girl smile J Other than that, I play at church on Sundays.  Four Ways to Form and Change Chords Faster Playing chords (striking more than one note at a time) is often one of the most challenging aspects of a beginner guitar student’s playing. It requires a fair amount of left hand flexibility and strength to fret (press down) multiple notes with multiple fingers. This continues to be a challenge for more advanced players as they learn new chord voicing. So don’t be discouraged if chords don’t come easily at first; you’re not alone! Here are a few tips to make forming and transitioning between chords easier. 1- Exercise your fingers with scales and other single note practices One of the very first exercises I give my students is one that involves picking single notes while fretting these notes with all four of the left hand fingers. This helps beginners develop strength in each finger for pressing down the strings, and also begins to build better coordination. Students should remember to press down with the very tip of their finger, and as close to the desired fret as possible. Scales can help left hand development in similar ways. 2- Minimize left hand movement This is one of the main ingredients to building better chords and faster chord changes. Often beginning students will make an error I call “resetting the left hand.” After one chord is formed, and the student prepares to move to the next, they will pull their hand 2 or 3 inches from the fret board. Each time this is done it takes up time and slows the chord change. It takes time to travel away from and back to the fret board. Instead students should try to shift their fingers very close to the strings and frets. 3- Look for shortcuts For example, during some chord changes you don’t have to move all your fingers. This is the case with G and D open chords. Both chords contain the third fret of the second string (the note D), which is played with the third finger. So if you are changing from G to D or vise versa, you don’t have to lift the third finger. Also there are sometimes different fingerings for the same chord. Try to choose one that minimizes how far your fingers have to go to get to the next chord. 4- Start by changing between only two or three chords - Don’t take on too much at once. Your fingers and mind have to develop muscle memory, or get used to moving certain ways to make one chord and move to the next. So you need to repeat those chords and changes over and over so they become internalized and second nature. By Jonathan Slater Guitar Instructor  Student of the Month: Abram Culver 1.
