Musicology School of Music October Recital

Due to the unwillingness of the Madison Street Festival our students will not be performing on October 3rd.

However, Musicology has set up a recital on campus on October 10th. There will be a 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm show time. 



Musicology Room a Treat/ Rock Band Costume Party

Musicology will be hosting a Halloween party on Halloween night. We will have trick or treating, games, fun activities, food, and drinks for everyone to enjoy! Come hang out and wear your favorite/scariest costume!


Musicology and the MDA 


 As you have seen in our last two newsletters, Musicology has teamed up with the MDA once again. We are featuring one MDA camper each month for you to meet. We hope to exceed our goal from last years MDA Lock In. Last year we raised over $2,000, so this year we hope to reach or exceed $2,500. On the following page is this month’s camper, Lily. We have set up a link on our website (www.musicologyschoolofmusic.com) for you to donate to her and the thousands of other children who have Muscular Dystrophy. 

Meet Alabama MDA Goodwill Ambassador, Lily

Hi! I’m Lily. I’m 10 years old, and I’m excited to tell my story to help MDA help kids like me. I have congenital muscular dystrophy, a genetic disease that makes my muscles weak. I use a power wheelchair to get around, and I need help from my family sometimes. But that doesn’t stop me from having fun and spending time with my friends. It doesn’t stop me from having the best time of the year at MDA summer camp. And it doesn’t stop me from dreaming of becoming the owner of a restaurant. My parents and I are so thankful for MDA and its commitment to finding treatments and cures for people like me. And we’re thankful for community friends who are helping to change lives and bring hope to everyone fighting muscle disease. Thank you so much for your support!

CHANGES IN AUTO PAY  


 Starting in October 2015, the credit card processing world is undergoing major changes. Due to all of the credit card fraud in recent years, the industry has gone to security chips on credit cards. These new cards need new technology (new card readers) for processing. These changes will affect the fees that we are charged per transaction. Due to these new fees, Musicology has decided to partner with a new processing company. Through research, it has become evident the most cost effective way for Musicology to proceed, beginning January 1, 2016, is to only except ACH payments and no longer except credit cards. We are sorry for this inconvenience, but to continue credit card processing it is not an option for Musicology at this time. We believe in the safety of your information. We do not keep records of your banking information after it has been put into the encrypted date processing system. Because of this safety measure and the move to the new processing company, we will need a voided check from each client, including those who are currently enrolled in ACH auto pay. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Quentin Roddie, Eric Brown, or Kat Galinaitis at the office. Again, we are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Teacher of the Month
Naphtali Rothrock


1. What are the things you like the most about teaching? I love watching the students grow - both musically and in other ways. It's great to look back over several weeks, months, or even years and see how far they've come and how many new skills they've learned. And it's great to just be a part of so many young people's lives and watch them mature and grow into adulthood.

2. How do you inspire students to practice more? I try to keep things interesting! If students are having fun and enjoying what they get to learn and play, they'll want to practice on their own without too much "pushing" from teachers and parents. I also try to convey to students some good practice techniques, and the idea that practicing doesn't have to be a difficult, boring chore. Practicing doesn't need to mean tying yourself to the piano bench for half an hour getting frustrated - if you can just take a few minutes several times throughout the day to run that scale a few times, or work on those 4 really tricky measures in your song, you won't feel nearly as overwhelmed about practicing, and you'll probably end up putting in more quality time and getting better results than you would have otherwise!

3. What part do you feel that playing or singing in a group has in a student’s development? While I am a big fan of solo performances and recitals, I do think that group playing and/or singing also has a huge role in developing musically. It can be a big inspiration to practice more - when you see how much cooler your instrument or voice sounds when combined with other instruments and voices, naturally you want to learn more awesome pieces to play! It also reinforces some very important musical skills - when playing solo you can often "get by" with not being completely accurate about rhythm or intonation, but in a group those little rhythm errors can be disastrous! So it pushes you to a higher level of proficiency. And at the end of the day, it's just FUN to get together with a bunch of other musicians and hear what you can create together!  

4. What is your favorite type of music? While I enjoy listening to many different kinds of music - everything from Vivaldi and Bach to Journey and Bon Jovi, I have to say that my favorite type of music to listen to is country western... especially the stuff from a few decades back, such as George Strait, Crystal Gayle, and Ronnie Milsap. My favorite singers of all time are the "Statler Brothers" - a country/gospel group that very few people even know of anymore. I just love the Barbershop-quartet type harmonies!
